On Friday at Maharashtra's Aurangabad, at least 15 migrant laborers returning to Chhattisgarh in the midst of the nationwide lockdown died after being struck by a goods train. Officials said one person suffered injuries.
The incident happened on the Aurangabad-Jalna railway line at around 6:30 am.
An official told PTI news agency that due to fatigue the labourers who had been walking along the tracks on the railway slept. The official added early in the morning they'd been mowed down by the train.
"They had walked along the railroad tracks and slept there because of fatigue. A train mowed them down," the official told the news agency.
The Railways Ministry has now put out a tweet and said the tragic incident has been directed to be investigated.
"Today, after seeing some staff on the line, loco freight train pilot tried to stop the train but eventually hit them between Badnapur and Karmad stations in the Parbhani-Manmad section. The injured were taken to Aurangabad Civil Hospital. An inquiry was ordered," said the ministry.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he talked to Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Facebook, and asked him to control the situation. Modi has also ensured that all possible support is given.
Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla in a Twitter post called the incident "very tragic and unfortunate."
"The tragic death on the Jalna railway line of migrant laborers is extremely sad and unfortunate. Homage to the deceased. May God place the deceased at his feet. I hope the wounded get well early," he said.
Progress comes at a time when displaced migrant workers are returning to their home states in the midst of the nationwide lockdown.
Many of those migrant labourers were forced to walk long distances to their home states because they could not find transportation.
