Chief of Congress, Sonia Gandhi, said the workers are the backbone of our economy and declared that each state's Congress Committee would bear the costs of their rail travel.
In the wake of the novel coronavirus shutdown, Congress Leader Sonia Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the Center to charge migrant labourers returning home for their train journey and said Congress should bear the expense of their journey.
"Our workforce and labourers are the backbone of our economy. Our nation is built on their hard work and dedication," she said.
Sonia Gandhi said, "Therefore, the Indian National Congress has agreed that each Pradesh Congress Committee shall bear the rail travel costs of every needy worker and migrant worker and take the required steps in this regard. This will be the humble contribution of the Indian National Congress in the name of our compatriots and in solidarity with them, standing shoulder to shoulder.
Targeting the Center on the problem of migrant labourers stuck in different parts of the world, she said, "But what is our responsibility of the government? Even today, lakhs of workers and migrant labourers remain stuck in different parts of the country and want to return to their homes and families, but there is no sufficient money or free transportation.
What is especially troubling is that in this hour of crisis, they are paid by the central government and the Rail Ministry for train tickets.
"After the 1947 partition, this is the first time that India has experienced a tragedy of such huge human costs that thousands of migrant workers and labourers have been forced to walk several hundred kilometers on foot — without food, without medicines, without income, without transportation, without anything but the desire to return to their families and loved ones. The very concept of their suffering would be enough to destroy our hearts as there has also been an outpouring of fellow Indians' support for their inspirational determination, "said Sonia Gandhi.
