A 44-year-old labourer allegedly was beaten to death by a private hospital's medical workers following a Thursday dispute about paying Rs 4,000 bills in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh.
The victim has been identified as Sultan Khan, who has been attacked on the bypass of Quarsi city. Khan had come to the hospital, accompanied by his nephew Chaman, to get himself treated as he faced urinating difficulties from the past few days. The brazen attack was captured on nearby mounted closed-circuit TV (CCTV) camera, The Times of India reported.
'We had asked for the cost of the treatment, to which hospital authorities said they would only let us know after an ultrasound. But they charged us Rs 5,000 for medicines without performing an ultrasound- which we paid for,' Chaman narrated. Hours later they were informed by the hospital authorities that Rs 4,000-Rs 5,000 will be charged for hospital beds per day.
'We could not pay the fee so we begged the authority to discharge it. However, while leaving the hospital, we were followed by a staff member who demanded 4,000 Rs hospital charges,' Chaman said. 'The state of my uncle was not pleasant, so I pleaded with the workers to let us go but they started to thrash my uncle,' he said.
Denying the claim, the hospital management's Dr Danish Ali claimed that the patient did not pay Rs 2,000 hospital fees when staffers requested the pending number. The patient then threatened staff at the hospital.
Nevertheless, the CCTV video showed the hospital staff member went into the premises after a brief altercation with the patient's relative and came out with other colleagues armed with sticks. They were seen beating khan mercilessly with sticks after which he succumbed to injuries.
'As of now, no FIR has been lodged, we 're investigating the case,' said Inspector Chote Lal of Kwarsi Police Station. However, as of now no FIR has been submitted in the event.
