An operation by security forces in Handwara town in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district has come to an end after an intense gun battle that lasted for nearly 8 hours. In this confrontation with militants, one Lieutenant, one Officer, two Army jawans and a police sub-inspector have been killed, according to news agency PTI.
Among those martyred is Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, commanding officer of 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) unit. He was part of previous active counter-terrorism operations. Colonel Sharma was the only commanding officer in Kashmir to have been decorated a second time for gallantry, officials told India Today. He had earned gallantry as a CO when he had saved his men's lives by subduing a insurgent with a concealed grenade to run towards them.
Other security personnel martyred today at Handwara were named as Major Anuj Sood, Naik Rajesh and Lance Naik Dinesh. At first light of day, the Indian Army carried out a final assault to neutralize militants hiding in the city. Re-enforcement was instituted, and as part of the standard operating procedure (SOP) a door-to-door operation was performed. As part of the process, internet services were also snapped into Handwara.
