"Pray For Everyone's Safety": PM On Gas Leak In Visakhapatnam Plant

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he is hoping for the health of all those affected by a toxic gas leak from a chemical plant in Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh this morning. The Premier also called for an NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) meeting at 11 am to review rescue operations in the southern state.

"Talk to MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) and NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) officials about the situation in Visakhapatnam which is being closely monitored. I pray for the health and well-being of everyone in Visakhapatnam," tweeted Prime Minister Modi.

Minutes later, the Office of the Prime Minister (PMO) announced a meeting of the PM with officers of the NDMA.

"In the midst of the Visakhapatnam situation, PM Narendra Modi has called for an NDMA meeting at 11 AM," tweeted the PMO handle.

Home Minister Amit Shah also offered his condolences and support, saying he would "pray for Visakhapatnam's people's well-being."

"The incident in Vizag is troubling. Have spoken to NDMA officials and concerned authorities. We are monitoring the situation continuously and closely. I pray for the well-being of the Visakhapatnam people," Mr Shah said.

Congressman Rahul Gandhi also tweeted, saying he was "shocked," asking party members and local leaders to support rescue and relief efforts.

"I am shocked to learn about the Vizag gas leak. I urge the Congress workers and leaders in the area to provide the requisite help and assistance to those affected. I hope that those in hospital make a fast recovery, "tweeted Mr Gandhi.

After toxic gas leaked from the chemical plant owned by a multinational corporation, at least eight people, including a child, died. About 200 people were hospitalized.

"There is gas leakage found at LG Polymers in Gopalpatnam. Requesting people around these locations not to leave their homes in the interests of health," the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation tweeted."

In distressing images of the incident, people can be seen attempting to support the wounded and carry them to waiting ambulances while in the background an industrial siren is being heard.

People in masks can be seen holding those with respiratory difficulties; they are forced to sit by the side of the road before ambulances arrive, and emergency services arrive.
