\Uttar Pradesh gangster Vikas Dubey was reportedly shot dead from Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain on Friday morning as he was being taken to Kanpur. One of the vehicles in the police convoy derailed while being transported. Police have allegedly fired at Dubey after attempting to grab a weapon and flee the scene.
Dubey was arrested from the Mahakaleshwar temple on Thursday, in Ujjain. He had been on the run since 3 July when police attempted to raid his village near Kanpur, Bikru. Five of his close aides, including his personal bodyguard, have been killed by police since.
Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra had announced the arrest. Mishra said Dubey had arrived from Kota in Rajasthan by road to Ujjain. "Intelligence matters are not to be revealed. If he was detained from inside or outside the (Mahakaleshwar) temple is immaterial.
It would be enough to say he 'd been arrested in Ujjain, "Mishra said.
In a late night press conference Ujjain police superintendent Manoj Kumar Singh said the police action was "clear and transparent." He said the man from whom he bought flowers at the temple had recognised Dubey. The dealer, Rajesh Kumar, had seen pictures of the gangster on tv.
